Celebrating BHM: Shirley Chisolm
To kick off Black History Month, we are featuring the ERA champion and glass-ceiling-breaking bad ass, Shirley Chisholm!
As the first Black Woman ever elected to the United States Congress, Shirley was a a vocal and avid activist for equality measures such as the Equal Rights Amendment. Another glass ceiling she shattered? She was the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination as well as the first woman to appear in a United States presidential debate.
Shirley Chisholm is known for her empowering quotes. Although it is impossible to pick a favorite, one of the best goes as follows: “You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.” Who knew that in 2020, we would have to implement the radical idea that all genders are created equal?
Stay tuned for the stories and impacts of activists who were black throughout this Black History Month and beyond. Art by @lucy.han!
